What is a wheelchair scale?
A wheelchair scale is a weighing scale large enough to accommodate a patient on a wheelchair. The scale provides the weight of the patient on the wheelchair or, using Tare, the weight of the patient only.
A wheelchair scale allows the patient to remain in their own wheelchair, where they feel comfortable. This also saves time weighing patients.
Marsden wheelchair scales are robust, reliable and suitable for almost any size of wheelchair. All are Class III Approved for medical use.
What does Class III Approved mean?
Class III Approved scales have been built, tested, verified and calibrated to meet the standards set in the Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments (NAWI) directive. This requires ‘all scales used in the determination of mass in the practice of medicine patients for the purpose of monitoring, diagnosis and medical treatment’ to be Class III Approved.
Class III Approved scales undergo a rigorous testing programme by an EU Notified Body. This extensive testing provides assurance to the user that the scale meets the required level or accuracy, reliability and repeatability. Find out more here.
How do I know which wheelchair scale to choose?
Portable wheelchair scales
If portability is a priority, the Marsden M-610 wheelchair scale consists of two weighbeams that have carry handles and wheels with the option of durable carry cases. This makes the M-610 perfect for the community health visitor.
Also ideal for community health visitors, the portable Marsden M-615 has two weigh beams that can fold into a case and are lightweight.
The Marsden M-620 wheelchair scale is a platform with a trolley which means this option can easily be wheeled around the hospital or care home. The scale folds up onto the trolley for easy, compact storage.
The Marsden M-640, which featured on ITV’s Weight Loss Ward, is a genuine bariatric scale built for the very largest of patients. Handrails mean it’s also suitable for those patients who prefer to stand but aren’t too steady on their feet.
Wheelchair weighing platforms
The Marsden M-650 wheelchair scale and its variations are our most popular wheelchair scales.
For weighing patients standing the Marsden M-653 has one handrail and the Marsden M-652 has two handrails.
For weighing patients in a wheelchair the Marsden M-651 is a platform scale with a column-mounted indicator. The base has been sympathetically designed with long, gentle inclines on the ramps to make life as easy as possible for the nurse.
Marsden wheelchair scales are available with Bluetooth for connecting the scales to telehealth systems and wirelessly transferring weight, height and BMI data to a central database.
